
Awka, Anambra State — No fewer than seven people were killed on Monday in a gunmen attack targeting security operatives and unarmed civilians in the Ihiala area of Anambra State. The tragic incident has been confirmed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
In a statement made available to journalists in Awka, SP Ikenga disclosed that the assailants launched the attack around 11:20 a.m., shooting sporadically at a venue where preparations were ongoing for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2, 2025. The gunmen also targeted a security observation post near the Local Government headquarters along the Express Road while fleeing the scene.
“The unfortunate attack resulted in the death of seven persons, including two unarmed passers-by,” Ikenga stated.
The police also revealed that one victim was rescued and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital. The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and interviewed eyewitnesses. He has since ordered an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators.
While extending condolences to the families and friends of the victims, as well as the people of Ihiala, the Commissioner assured that the attackers would be brought to justice.
“The CP further assured that the perpetrators of this heinous crime would be hunted down,” Ikenga added.
The police have called on members of the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the gunmen responsible for this brutal act.
