Calabar, – The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) continues to uphold its reputation for academic excellence, largely due to the enduring legacy of suspended Vice Chancellor, Professor Austin Angba. Despite his suspension under the administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, the university remains a leading institution in Africa, as confirmed by the recent Times Higher Education (THE) report.
On July 21, 2024, THE released its latest rankings, placing UNICROSS at the top of the list of the best African universities. This achievement is a testament to the deliberate and committed efforts of Professor Angba, who worked tirelessly to establish sustainable teaching standards that have proved resilient over time.
Professor Angba’s tenure as Vice Chancellor was marked by significant advancements in the university’s academic programs, infrastructure, and overall quality of education. His vision and dedication have left an indelible mark, ensuring that UNICROSS maintains its high standards even after his departure.
Under his leadership, the university introduced innovative teaching methods, improved research facilities, and fostered a culture of academic excellence that continues to benefit students and the institution.
However, the decision to suspend Professor Angba from his position raised concerns about the future direction of the university. Critics argue that Governor Otu’s administration failed to recognize the importance of maintaining the high standards set by Angba. This decision, they claim, reflects a lack of value for educational excellence and stability.
But of concern is that the level of administrative distortion and damage that would have been done to the stable system even if the suspension is finally lifted. Well meaning Crossriverians must appeal to Prince Otu to urgently lift the suspension and recall Prof. ANGBA so as to sustain his ‘people’s first agenda and acclaimed commitment to the education sector in CRS.
Aside from the uncountable interventions and benefits he attracted to the University, Prof Angba, before his suspension facilitated and attracted a N4B very high profile intervention to UNICROSS. This is unprecedented and highly commendable especially for a State University and a low revenue State. The intervention is to provide a well furnished ultra modern library in calabar campus (a very dire need), about four thousand classroom desks, construction and furnishing of two Faculty buildings in Okuku and Ogoja campuses.
ANGBA took the university to rank No.7 in Nigeria and 37 in Sub Sahara Africa by the Sub Sahara Africa The Higher Education (THE) June 2023 ranking. How can a VC who’ takes a university to this point inspite of the known poor funding and other challenges be rewarded with a suspension and possibly sack for whatever political reason?
Despite these challenges, the foundation laid by Professor Angba has proven resilient. The recent THE ranking underscores the lasting impact of his work and serves as a reminder of what can be achieved with visionary leadership and a commitment to quality education.
As UNICROSS continues to thrive, it is imperative for current and future administrators to uphold the standards set by Professor Angba. Only through deliberate efforts can the university maintain its position as a beacon of academic excellence in Africa.
In the face of changing leadership and political dynamics, the legacy of Professor Austin Angba stands as a powerful example of how sustainable educational standards can be established and preserved. His contributions to UNICROSS will undoubtedly inspire future generations to continue striving for excellence, ensuring that the university remains a leader in higher education for years to come.
