Calabar, May 22, 2024 – In a dramatic turn of events at the Cross River State House of Assembly, the Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Elvert Ayambem, Mr Mathew Okache has vehemently disputed claims of his impeachment. According to the press release issued, the purported impeachment of Speaker Ayambem was described as a “charade” orchestrated by a faction within the House led by Effiong Akarika, the member representing Calabar South 1.
The press secretary clarified that no formal impeachment notice was issued, nor was the due process followed, rendering any such claims invalid. The statement emphasized that the actions led by Akarika did not comply with the constitutional and procedural requirements necessary for a legitimate impeachment process.
“Speaker Ayambem remains the legitimate Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly,” the press secretary stated. “The attempt to unseat him was not only premature but also procedurally flawed, lacking the necessary formalities and adherence to the rule of law.”
The press release further called for calm and assured the public that Speaker Ayambem continues to perform his duties. It highlighted the importance of maintaining legislative integrity and upholding democratic principles within the House.
This dispute follows reports earlier in the day that indicated a majority of the assembly members had supported the impeachment of Speaker Ayambem. However, the press secretary’s rebuttal casts doubt on the legitimacy of those reports and the actions taken by the dissenting members.
Effiong Akarika and his supporters have yet to respond to these new allegations. The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for the governance and legislative proceedings in Cross River State.
As the controversy unfolds, all eyes will be on the Cross River State House of Assembly to see how this power struggle is resolved and whether a formal resolution or intervention will be required to settle the dispute.
For now, Speaker Elvert Ayambem remains at the helm, reaffirming his commitment to his role and the responsibilities entrusted to him by the Assembly and the people of Cross River State.
