Electricity Tarrifs: Labour Unions Shut Down NERC, DisCo Offices in Kano

Protesters carrying placards were seen in Kano when the Trude Union Congress demolished electricity company headquarters.

More than a hundred Trade Union Congress (TUC) members descended on the Nigerian energy Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) headquarters in protest of Nigeria’s recent energy pricing increase.

The majority of the demonstrators were spotted holding placards with inscriptions such as “Stop Suffocating Us,” “Cut Down the Reckless Cost of Governance,” and

The Poor Can No Longer Breathe,” among others. Protesters, mostly from the NLC and the TUC, sang Labour Solidarity anthems at the entrance gate of the KEDCO headquarters on Post Office Road in the city.

The union members urged that the raise be reversed and that discriminatory practices in the electrical sector be eliminated. The union leaders criticised the Federal Government’s policies, claiming that they had suffocated Nigerians by increasing electricity tariffs.
