Abuja, Nigeria — In a bold political move ahead of the 2027 general elections, prominent figures within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark, have called on Nigerians to rally together in unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The call was made in Abuja on Tuesday following a closed-door meeting convened to assess the current state of the PDP and the broader national political climate. The high-level gathering also included key party stalwarts such as former governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), and Liyel Imoke (Cross River), as well as former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the group expressed concern over the PDP’s steady decline since its defeat in the 2023 presidential election and the subsequent resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as national chairman. They cited internal divisions, constitutional violations, and a lack of direction as major challenges weakening the party’s structure and appeal.
“The PDP must urgently rebuild itself, not just as an opposition party but as a credible alternative to rescue Nigeria from the brink,” the communiqué stated. It further called for the formation of a broad-based coalition of Nigerians and political actors committed to national unity, security, economic recovery, democratic principles, and a renewed fight against corruption.
The leaders accused the APC-led Federal Government of weakening democratic institutions and using state resources to intimidate opposition politicians. They decried the country’s deteriorating economy, worsening insecurity, and a growing distrust in governance, describing the ruling party’s performance as a “total failure.”
According to the PDP leaders, many of their elected officials have defected under intense political pressure and patronage offered by the ruling party, further destabilizing the PDP and undermining democratic plurality.
Tuesday’s meeting is one of several recent efforts by opposition figures to reposition themselves ahead of 2027. It adds momentum to growing coalition talks that include notable figures such as Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and ex-Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, among others—signaling the possible birth of a formidable political alliance aimed at ending APC dominance.
The PDP leaders ended the session with a call to action: for party members, coalition partners, and patriotic Nigerians to collaborate in building a platform that reflects the realities of both national and local politics in preparation for future elections.
