The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that a female resident, Chiamaka Okeke, was fatally shot by an operative of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Agunechemba security outfit, known officially as Operation Udo Ga-Achi, during a traffic incident in Nnewi.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening, April 15, at Ibeto Junction in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area, during a chaotic scene as the security convoy attempted to clear a traffic gridlock.
Eyewitnesses reported that the convoy was held up in the traffic and, in an aggressive effort to make way, members of the security outfit began firing shots into the air. One of the bullets, however, struck and killed Chiamaka Okeke, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement released on Wednesday that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, is already in contact with the Agunechemba unit to identify the officer responsible and ensure justice is served.
“This is following a report in the evening of yesterday, 15th April 2025 of the regrettable incident at Ibeto junction, Nnewi where a trigger-happy security operative shot a lady who was later identified as Chiamaka Okeke, which resulted in her death,” SP Ikenga said.
The Commissioner of Police has called for calm, assuring the public that a full investigation is underway and that updates will be provided as more details emerge.
The Agunechemba outfit was established as a community-based security response initiative under Governor Soludo’s administration to address rising insecurity in Anambra State. However, this incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct and professionalism of the operatives.
As of the time of this report, neither the governor nor officials from the Operation Udo Ga-Achi outfit have issued a public statement.
