Augustine Eguavoen Resigns as Super Eagles Coach, Cites Completion of Two-Game Mandate

Augustine Eguavoen has officially stepped down as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles following his team’s barren draw against Rwanda in an international fixture earlier today. Eguavoen, who was appointed on a short-term basis, stated that his mandate covered only two games—both of which he completed successfully.

Under Eguavoen’s brief tenure, the Super Eagles delivered an emphatic 3-0 victory against Benin Republic in his first match, followed by today’s stalemate against Rwanda. The coach, known for his previous stints with the national team, emphasized that his agreement with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) was clear: two matches, after which his role would come to an end.

“My task was to lead the team in these two games, and I am proud of how we performed. We secured a 3-0 win against Benin Republic and earned a draw today. I believe I’ve fulfilled my mandate, and it’s time for the NFF to decide the future of the team,” Eguavoen said in a press briefing after the match.

Eguavoen, who is a former Super Eagles player and coach, had stepped into the role after the NFF faced a coaching vacancy earlier this year. His short-term leadership saw an immediate impact, with Nigeria putting up solid performances that garnered praise from fans and football analysts.

The NFF is expected to announce the next steps in their search for a permanent head coach. However, Eguavoen’s exit leaves the team in a stable position, with the coach expressing confidence in the squad’s potential moving forward.

“I’m leaving with a sense of accomplishment, and I know the team is in good hands. They are ready for greater challenges,” Eguavoen concluded.

Football fans across Nigeria are now keenly awaiting the NFF’s next move as the Super Eagles gear up for their upcoming international commitments.
