The Federal Executive Council (FEC) may propose setting a new minimum wage for workers today. The controversial minimum wage dispute will dominate today’s key FEC meeting talks.
With the most recent meeting on May 13th and 14th, the FEC meetings will now be held every Monday under President Bola Tinubu’s directive, rather than on Wednesdays.
The Federal Government acknowledged its ability to raise the minimum wage to 62,000. This was based on a report from a newly formed tripartite committee.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are demanding a minimum wage of ₦250,000.
Today’s meeting is significant since it is expected to close the gap between the government’s proposal and labour’s demands.
In today’s meeting, the council is expected to thoroughly assess Labour’s position as well as what the government can realistically handle.
