The Rivers State Government has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against any attempts to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Joseph Johnson, the state’s Commissioner of Information and Communications, stated that the 27 lawmakers who are reportedly supporting the impeachment lack moral authority to do so.
In response to requests by APC’s Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Okocha, for swift impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, Johnson emphasised the opposition such measures would receive from Rivers State residents. Recommended for you.
He said, “It won’t be an easy path. They should not consider going on it because the Rivers people will resist them. Rivers people will fight them because the idea is absurd. They are not battling for legitimacy; they are fighting for their own existence. On which plank will you place that? The law states that you cannot layer legality on criminality.
As far as we are concerned, they lack the locus standi to do so. They shouldn’t bother starting it because Section 109(g) has already resolved the case. It states that if an Assembly member defected from the party that brought him to power, he would instantly forfeit his seat. They’ve done it, and everything is settled. Our Constitution is the supreme standard.
Sokonte Davies, a former APC chairman, declared Tony Okocha to be a non-member of the party only yesterday. He is a factional chairman. We want the faction led by Chief Emeka Beke to make the same statement. Okocha stands on one leg. His call is an empty one. His advice to impeach the governor is pointless, and they will fail. The lawmakers do not exist, and they are not mentioned in the statute.”
