The Chinese supermarket located in Abuja has been accused of breaking Nigerian law by labelling all of its products in Yuan, according to the Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission.
The commission further stated that it is still debating whether to impose suitable penalties on Liu Bei, the supermarket’s owner, for forbidding Nigerians from using the establishment.
In a Sunday interview with Channels TV, Adamu Abdullahi, the commission’s interim Executive Vice Chairman, reaffirmed this.
He said the proprietor is also required to put up a sign saying the business is available to all patrons.# Nigerians protested last Sunday against the supermarket’s policy of allowing only Chinese nationals admission and forbidding Nigerians from using the business.
Nigerians expressed their concerns about the unfair treatment in response to this news, which drew widespread censure.
Yes, she arrived at the commission on time, and when we went to the store with her, she opened it and made some really amazing discoveries, the man remarked.# There were representatives from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and embassy. We found out that the only currency they take is Yuan, and all of the things were branded in that denomination. It is illegal in Nigeria to do it. We don’t provide goods for sale in foreign currencies. In Nigeria, all sales ought to be made in the local currency.
After it was established that there was discrimination against those who were only permitted entry inside the supermarket, we gave her the order to post a sign outside the store stating that anyone may enter and browse. In addition, there is the Yuan issue and pricing display. We are talking to her about making things right.
